Kia Ora,

This month we give you the run down on Biketober and Auckland Street Art Bike Challenge, so you've got plenty to look forward to riding-wise.

There's also a consultation worth taking part in - especially if you travel around the northwest.

Plus, if you’ve got a great idea to address climate action in the area of transport, why not put forward an application for the Auckland Climate Grant?

Biketober 2023

What’s coming up this Biketober

Waiheke-Island dwellers (or those keen for a really fun weekend adventure over on Waiheke), get ready for a month filled with cycle activities!

Cycling is not just a fun activity - it's a form of clean transport that helps reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. By choosing to pedal, you're making a positive impact on our planet.

Bike Hub Waiheke is putting on a great range of activities - for those who live in the area, or those who want to make the ferry journey out with their bike and take part.

Check out some great upcoming events, including an introduction to bikepacking, a cosy movie night, or a social group ride.

Have your say on the future of transport in the northwest

Northwest rapid transit

Northwest rapid transit

Do you travel in the northwest? Then we want to hear from you.

As part of the growth of the wider rapid transit network, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport agency and partners are investigating options to provide fast, frequent and reliable rapid transport for people to get around the northwest of Auckland - from Brigham Creek to the city centre, alongside State Highway 16 (SH16).

We’re working closely with Waka Kotahi on this project that will transform the travel options for people in the northwest. The project is also looking into what improvements are needed to improve walking and cycling connections for any new stations that are provided.

We would love to get your thoughts on the project. Feedback is open until 24 September 2023.

Got your fav street art spots ready for the challenge?

Dust off your wheels and get ready to hit the ground cycling in the Auckland Street Art Bike Challenge launching 1 October!

Share your street art photos

Spring has sprung and that means longer days and warmer weather. It’s also time to make a mental note of your favourite street art spots so you and your wheels are ready to strike a pose once ‘Biketober’ kicks in!

Remember, once you’re ready to post to Facebook or Insta, use #streetartbikechallenge so EcoMatters can enter you into the draw for $1000 worth of prizes. They’d also love to add your fav spots to the map, so geotags or location descriptions are very welcome.

Auckland Climate Grant 2023

Do you have a great idea for community climate action?

Applications for the Auckland Climate Grants close on 23 October!

The Auckland Climate Grant is a targeted grant programme to support community-based climate action.

The grant provides funding support for projects that:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions through community-based action
  • Build community resilience to climate impacts
  • Support Māori-led responses to climate change

If you’ve got a great idea to address climate action in the area of transport, why not put forward an application? A transport project should support low-carbon, safe transport systems that deliver social, economic and health benefits for all. This will include innovative solutions that reduce the need for travel.

Check out the types of grants available, and how you can apply today! For those first-time applicants, there are also support workshop sessions that take you through the process and drop-in sessions to provide further support.
