Upcoming changes to public transport services

A number of public transport services are changing at the end of 2020 or early 2021 in response to Auckland Council’s emergency budget and customer demand.

Changes include the removal of some peak time bus services where they duplicate other all-day services, and poorly patronised routes or sections of routes where there are, in most cases, alternative options for customers.

Some much-needed improvements to areas of increased demand see existing bus routes changed to serve Karaka Lakes and Donegal Park. Laingholm will get buses on Sundays.

Ferry service resources will be reallocated from the Stanley Bay service, which will cease on 24 Devember, to the Hobsonville service from late January 2021. With Stanley Bay having low patronage, and demand in Hobsonville growing, this change will increase the overall use of the ferry network, without increasing Council and central government public subsidy expenditure.

Downtown ferry terminal update

One of the most significant projects in the Downtown Programme, the upgrade to the ferry terminal will transform the way ferry services operate on the Waitematā Harbour.

The Downtown ferry precinct is rapidly taking shape, with six new ferry berths stretching along Queens Wharf. The project will be completed in the first half of 2021 and it’s by far the biggest upgrade to Auckland’s ferry infrastructure and passenger services in more than a hundred years. A grand design to manage the crowds that will flow through Downtown every day and with improved ferry services the inner city will be truly connected to the wider region. Did you know you can now plan your walking or cycling commute on the AT Mobile app?

Planning a walking or cycling commute has just become easier with the launch of a new journey planner function within the AT Mobile app.

With more people looking for different ways to travel, the new journey planner function will provide route information for people choosing to travel by foot or bike.

The function is easy to use, just select a start and endpoint, the planner will pick the most cycle/walk friendly route for you. The routing also prioritises safe cycling, using cycling infrastructure and quiet routes wherever possible, and displays this information on a map.

Auckland’s newest bus route

Route 64 is the newest addition to Auckland’s bus network. It operates every 15 minutes between Kingsland Station, Valley Rd shops, Mt Eden Rd near Mt Eden Village, Grafton, and Newmarket. Introduced on 5 July in time for the closure of Mt Eden Station, the route provides a crosstown option through these popular suburbs.

The route will remain in place for the next four years while Mt Eden Station is closed. Trips cost 1 cent (that’s right, just 1 cent!).
