Busway Update

Kia ora and welcome to the November update.

Work to build the busway is gathering pace in Pakūranga, along Tī Rākau Drive and around Gossamer Drive, which means there’ll be ongoing changes to the road layout. Ensuring that you can get safely to where you’re going during construction is important to us. It requires careful planning, and we appreciate your patience.

The construction timeline is a summary of the main activities on the project between now and 2027. See at a glance what’s in progress and what’s coming up in the next few years.

Improvements in the Pakūranga area

We’re working at night on Tī Rākau Drive to install underground signal cables for traffic lights at Palm Avenue, and we’re continuing to improve the stormwater network around Pakūranga Plaza.

People building the busway

Auckland Transport is working with Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA, AECOM and Jacobs as the Eastern Busway Alliance. We’re building the Pakūranga to Botany section of the busway as well as the flyover above Reeves Road and across Tī Rākau Drive in partnership with mana whenua.

Staff from the five organisations include specialists in safety, community engagement, sustainability, design, construction, risk and commercial management, sharing their skills and knowledge to deliver this large and complex infrastructure project.

The alliance is a diverse, multinational team and includes 68 staff from east Auckland.

Work with us

Tī Rākau Drive to Botany

Thank you to everyone who attended the community sessions in August and September on a section of the busway route from Tī Rākau Drive to Botany and provided feedback to us.

The purpose of the consultation was to inform and engage people in the area on the design on this section of the busway and to gather your insights to be considered in the resource consent application and the project’s detailed design.

Some of the main feedback themes were:

  • support for the proposals based on the need to improve public transport options and reduce congestion
  • requests that the proposals maintain and enhance green space at Whaka Maumahara and Guys Reserve
  • celebration of the area’s Māori heritage and culture
  • construction impacts including noise, traffic and vibration and environmental effects
  • requests for safe, wide footpaths and cycleways, with clear lines of sight and separated from bus and vehicle traffic
  • recommendations for a future Botany bus station to be within, or as close as possible to, Botany Town Centre.

Outcomes from the engagement are being shared with the alliance team and Auckland Transport decision makers to inform the ongoing development of the project’s design. Further updates will be shared with the community as they are progressed.
