Kia ora,

We’re back with another edition of our monthly newsletter, packed with all the latest updates!

Congratulations Vivian Naylor Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit

We’re delighted to share that Vivian Naylor, one of our long-standing Public Transport Accessibility Group (PTAG) members, was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Vivian Naylor

Vivian has been advocating and working to improve accessibility for those living with disabilities for more than 40 years.

Vivian requires a wheelchair for mobility due to an incident which resulted in a spinal injury. She was an adviser on transport and public access for people with disabilities with the Auckland Regional Authority in the 1970s. She has been part of the Crippled Children Society (now CCS Disability Action) since 1979 and helped establish the information arm of the new Independent Living Centre in Auckland.

Establishing the Attendant Care Scheme for those with disabilities, she became the Community Liaison Coordinator and Barrier Free Adviser and Educator. She helped establish the disability service Dial a Ride Transport in 1983, which ran until 2016 when it became fully funded and independent. As a founding Trustee of Barrier Free Trust New Zealand for 12 years, she supports delivering training to Territorial Authorities and other bodies.

Currently, she is a member of AT’s Public Transport and Capital Projects Accessibility Groups. Vivian has presented at conferences and seminars and offers advice on Universal Access and Design. We thank her for her exceptional service to her community.

Housing Survey – would you like to help?

Housing has a substantial influence on health and wellbeing. The Urban Advisory Group has created a new survey on New Zealand’s Housing to help inform a range of stakeholder groups on housing issues and community preferences.

The Survey will help build awareness around how people live, want to live and what barriers are in the way to achieving their housing aspirations. This survey plugs a critical gap in the information needed for meaningful decision making and is a longitudinal survey that will monitor changes over time.

The survey should take around 30 minutes to complete.  While the survey is online, you can ask to be sent a paper copy to complete.

Plus One Bus Companion fare – have you tried it?

The Plus One Bus Companion fare is now a year old.  The concession allows a Total Mobility card holder to travel on a bus using their accessible concession and take a caregiver for free to support their safety and dignity while travelling.

Bus companion fare

We know it won’t be suitable for all TM clients, but if it might work for you, we’ve provided some examples below of journeys you could take by bus.

You can see the cost difference between a taxi trip and bus trip. Some other factors to consider when taking the bus is planning the trip, managing the first and last portion of your journey on foot, waiting at the bus stop, and potentially a slower journey.
