An update on the Rail Network Rebuild

Stage 1 is nearly complete, and Stage 2 starting soon

RNR Stage 1 Update

KiwiRail is on track to complete Stage 1 of the Rail Network Rebuild by Sunday 19 March 2023.

The Rail Network Rebuild (RNR) is an essential upgrade of Auckland’s rail network. When complete and once City Rail Link opens, Auckland will have more frequent services and faster journeys on all-electric trains.

During Stage 1, KiwiRail worked on the Onehunga Line and the rail lines between Ōtāhuhu and Newmarket. If you love numbers like we do, the summary below helps to put into perspective the fantastic work being done:

  • 3,198 metres of formation (the rock foundation below the track) has been excavated and replaced
  • 5,547 metres of ballast (the larger rocks the tracks sit on) has been replaced
  • 4,018 metres of drainage has been improved
Find out more about the works

Stage 2 of the Rail Network Rebuild

20 March 2023 – January 2024

Five stations on the Eastern Line will be closed: Ōrakei, Meadowbank, Glen Innes, Panmure and Sylvia Park. All other train stations on the Eastern Line will be open.

We’ll have rail replacement buses, express rail replacement buses and our regular scheduled buses to keep you moving.

If you need to travel to Britomart from between Ōtāhuhu and Manukau, you’ll be able to use the Eastern line which will be rerouted through the Southern Line (via Newmarket).

From 12 March 2023, our AT Journey Planner will be updated with this information so you can plan your travel.
