Busway Update

Kia ora

On Saturday 1 April Hon Michael Wood, Minister of Transport and Minister for Auckland, and Mayor of Auckland Wayne Brown joined with Mana Whenua partners to turn the first sod, marking the start of construction for the final stretch of the project between Pakuranga and Botany.

Following the success of the Northern Busway on Auckland’s North Shore, the Eastern Busway is expected to transport 18,000 people each day between the rapidly growing south-eastern suburbs and the rail network in Panmure.

The project will deliver great benefits to the community. One example of this is that people will be able to travel between Botany and Britomart by bus and train in about 40 minutes, which is 20 minutes quicker than the current journey times.

Working with Watercare: Howick watermain upgrade

The Eastern Busway project team has started work to extend William Roberts Road through to Ti Rakau Drive. It is an ideal time for Watercare Services Ltd to begin replacing the large Howick watermain that runs below William Roberts Road, ensuring a ‘dig once’ approach.

Watercare and their contractor March Cato are leading the pipe replacement work and will let residents and neighbours know how to travel through the area while William Roberts Road is closed. The road layout changes will be in place until mid-2023.

Eastern Busway work on William Roberts Road will continue after the pipe has been replaced and we will keep you updated on progress.

Eastern Busway Stage 4 funding

There will be a delay to building Stage 4 of the busway from Ti Rakau Drive through Guys Reserve to Botany, and the Botany Town Centre Station. AT has not yet made an application for Stage 4 funding and will be progressing through the application process.

Until Stage 4 is built, an interim option will be provided for buses to travel in regular vehicle lanes along Ti Rakau Drive and Te Irirangi Drive to Botany Town Centre bus stops, which will be upgraded. The Eastern Busway project team will continue to seek funding to complete Stage 4 of the busway as soon as possible.

The project team will be seeking resource consents for the final stage of the project so that construction can go ahead when funding is available. We will hold community pop-in sessions to provide more information about this. The details of the sessions will be shared online and in future updates.

Recycling materials

When houses are removed to make way for major infrastructure projects, their parts are usually sent to landfill. Carpet, floorboards, corrugated iron, and plants all go to the same place.

With big sustainability goals, the Eastern Busway project team has been working hard to find new homes and purposes for these materials and provide local community members with requested items where possible.

Fai and Ta’i (pictured below) were delighted to take home cuttings from a hibiscus tree with unusually dark flowers. Both from Samoa, they particularly appreciate the hibiscus flower and were very excited to propagate the plant and give it a second life.

Completion of a big project like the busway creates change and some disruption. We’re keen to be good neighbours while the work is in progress, to update you regularly so that you know what to expect, and to help keep everyone safe.
