Kia Ora,

We’ve got a great lineup this month to keep you riding into autumn.

From Bike Film Festivals to seasonal riding tips, April is the perfect time to get out there and keep that momentum going from the Aotearoa Bike Challenge!

Make sure to keep reading for some key network upgrades taking place, especially if you’ll be riding around Hillsborough, Ōrākei and Tāmaki Drive.

Biking bright with daylight savings ending soon

Daylight savings is ending on 2 April, and mornings and evenings are getting darker and cooler. With the right gear, it’s a great time to ride a bike.

Riding between dusk and dawn, or in low light conditions, you’ll need a white light on the front and a red light on the back of your bike. These must be visible from 200m and it’s a good idea to angle them down a little so they don’t dazzle other people.

Wearing or carrying layers of clothing will do a better job of keeping you warm/cool than just one thick layer. Wearing something bright or colourful helps others to see you; reflective strips on your clothes or bags make you even more visible.

ABC Results 2023

While February threw a number of unexpected challenges at us, we still managed to get out and ride our bikes.

Across Aotearoa, a massive number of us rode an incredible number of trips, covering a huge distance, saving a significant amount of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

We also had an immense amount of fun. For our shortest month, February was big!

Groups, teams, workplaces and individuals competed for points – with the most points up for grabs for encouraging others to ride.

Keep riding and encouraging others throughout the year, you’re in good company.

Upgrades around our network impacting journeys by bike

There’s a lot of work happening on our transport networks. Here are four areas where journeys by bike are affected:

Hendry Ave safety improvements and detour

Due to start at the end of March, safety improvements to the SouthWestern Path on Hendry Ave, Hillsborough, will mean this section will be closed for approximately 3 months.

  • During this closure, a detour will be in place along Carlton Street, and there'll be signs in place directing you where to go.
  • Once completed, these improvements will make Hendry Ave a more pleasant place to ride and walk.

KiwiRail’s Rail Network Rebuild: Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai shared path

As KiwiRail teams start to deliver Stage 2 of its Rail Network Rebuild near the Meadowbank Train Station, they will impact part of Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai from late March for approximately eight weeks.

  • Construction vehicles accessing the train tracks need to cross the shared path between the end of Purewa Road and the start of the Ōrākei Basin boardwalk.
  • To keep everyone safe during this time, staffed Stop/Go signs will be in operation.
  • General working hours are between 6.30am - 6.30pm Monday - Saturday. Please be prepared to stop if needed.

Ngapipi Road, Ōrākei safety improvements

Interim safety improvements on Ngapipi Road, Ōrākei, are now in place.

  • There is a temporary separated north bound cycle lane from just north of the roundabout at Purewa Bridge to Whakatakataka Reserve.
  • If you’re riding south bound (Tāmaki Drive to Ōrākei Road), stay on the shared path.
  • This is in place while we build the  bridge and boardwalk section of Te Ara ki Uta Ki Tai connecting Ōrākei Train Station to Whakatakataka Reserve.

Works continue along the footpath on the sea side of Tāmaki Drive between Point Resolution Footbridge and Ngāpipi Road.

  • During this time, this section of the separated cycleway has temporarily become a shared path so remember to ring your bell when approaching others and give space when passing.
  • Work has also begun on Ngāpipi Estuary Bridge so the cycleway/shared path is closed between the western end of the bridge and the intersection with Ngāpipi Road.
  • Temporary traffic lights here enable people to cross the road safely from the sea side to the estuary side of the road.
  • The footpath on the estuary side of the road, from Ngāpipi road to The Strand, is also a shared path so if you’re riding here remember to use your bell and give space.

Ngā mihi
