Auckland is now a Vision Zero region

No deaths or serious injuries by 2050 on the road network in Tāmaki-Makaurau – that’s the goal after Vision Zero for Auckland was adopted by the Tāmaki-Makaurau Road Safety Governance Group¹ this month.

Vision Zero, an ethics-based transport safety approach, was developed in Sweden in the late 1990s. It places responsibility on system designers like Auckland Transport (AT) who design and operate our transport infrastructure to provide a safe system.

¹The Tāmaki-Makaurau Road Safety Governance Group is made up of AT, NZ Police, NZ Transport Agency, Ministry of Transport, Auckland Council, Auckland Regional Public Health Service and Accident Compensation Corporation.

ACC invests $5m in Auckland Transport’s safety programmes

Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) and AT have joined forces to improve the safety of Aucklanders. ACC has invested $5 million in AT’s safety programmes to reduce road trauma.

ACC is interested in AT’s safety programmes like Te Ara Haepapa. Te Ara Haepapa is a unique Māori road safety programme in New Zealand - developed in partnership with marae, kura kaupapa and the community.

Other AT programmes of interest to ACC are AT’s focus on reducing distractions while driving and in its projects to improve safety for people walking, people riding bicycles and motorcycles.
