Kia ora Brigid,Winter has its magical moments, but there’s something so promising about saying haere rā (farewell) to winter, and kia ora (welcome) to spring!
And what better way to celebrate a change in season than with Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori language week) and World Car Free day.
This month you should also keep your ears peeled for new audio announcements on our buses and check out some of the works taking place on Queen Street to improve the flow of foot traffic.

Jump on board this World Car Free day!

Mark Thursday 22 September in your calendar as the day to leave your car at home.
If it’s been a while since you have, it could be just the push you need to give walking, cycling, busing, or even scootering a go.
Transport accounts for 21% of emissions in NZ, so let’s enjoy a day without congestion and see how far our feet can take us with less of a carbon footprint.
And remember, with half-price bus, train and ferry fares* being extended until 31 January 2023 it’s the perfect time to plan your journey and think alternatively!

You might hear something new on your next bus rideWe’re all about creating easy journeys and connecting people with their communities.
With millions of bus boardings every year, improving the journey information available to you is a key part of this.
You’ll soon start to notice new bus audio announcements for “next-stop”, “transfer” and “disruption” information, in both Te Reo Māori and English. We’ll be gradually rolling this out across our network over 2022 and 2023, as the necessary equipment arrives from overseas.
We hope this comes in handy for when you’re not sure if your stop is coming up, especially when travelling at night. It can help inform you when to transfer to a different bus, train, or ferry service, or for any details about live service disruptions.
Don’t worry about losing that quiet thinking time on your journey though, as announcements will be played less than 10% of the time.
By providing a more accessible service to our customers, especially for our passengers with low vision, we hope for an improved and enjoyable experience when travelling around Tāmaki Makaurau.

Queen Street will soon have a new lookA designated path for speedy walkers, people cycling, and scooter riders

You might have noticed some works taking place to the footpath in front of the Civic theatre. By the end of September, a small section of the Waihorotiu path will be completed alongside it.
So what is the Waihorotiu path?
It’s an innovative multi-use path, giving fast walkers and people cycling or riding scooters a space to move, away from the road and from people walking at leisure next to shops. Planters filled with native foliage, different textures and colours on the pavement will define the space and help guide shoppers, bus users and those crossing the street.
The Waihorotiu path will be complete by November 2022, and you’ll be able to travel along it from Aotea Square to Shortland Street.
If you’re walking, you’ll have the right of way, but it’s still important to keep an eye out for others when using the new crossing points. Please look both ways if you’re hopping on or off a bus on Queen Street and watch out for bikes or scooters.
