Early work begins on the Eastern Busway

We’re progressing with site clearance in Pakuranga, making way for the Eastern Busway to be built between Pakuranga and Botany.

The preparation stage will include deconstruction and removal of houses, buildings and trees in Auckland Council owned properties on Ti Rakau Drive between the South-Eastern Highway and Ti Rakau Drive Bridge, on Seven Oaks Drive and on William Roberts Road. The project team has been working with both commercial and residential tenants to support them into new accommodation, ahead of the deconstruction work beginning.

Environmental sustainability is another important part of the project  and as many items as possible from the properties are being reused and repurposed. At least 80% of non-contaminated materials will be diverted from going to landfill.

Work during the next few months will make space for the busway, new cycle lanes, footpaths and planting, and the Reeves Road Flyover that will reduce vehicle congestion around Pakuranga Town Centre.

Biodegradable seedling pots at Anchorage Park School

PolBionix pot being planted at Anchorage Park School

A new product developed with help from the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund is offering a plastic-free alternative to the 350 million plastic trays and pots used by New Zealand nurseries and gardeners each year.

Some of the PolBionix™ pots were planted by the children at Anchorage Park School in Pakuranga during September in a collaboration with the Eastern Busway project team. The school and the project team are focused on sustainability, so the planting day was a perfect match of values, and a wonderful chance to work together in the spring sunshine.

The sustainable pots were developed by Pinehurst Associates and can last 12 months above ground before biodegrading. They have the potential to make a difference globally and will be sold commercially through Wilson and Ross Limited within the next year.

Burswood site investigations

Investigation work is in progress along road corridors and on private properties in Burswood, with owners’ consent.

The work will help the project team understand the ground conditions and exact location of underground services including water, electricity, and gas pipes. The information being gathered will help develop the proposed design of the busway.

Access to neighbouring properties will be maintained during the work. Any local detours will be clearly signposted and traffic controllers will be in place to help people safely navigate the area. Please remain within the speed limit when travelling in and around the work to help keep everyone safe.
