Solving the bus driver shortage

Before Christmas last year, we had a shortfall of more than 570 bus drivers. The ripple effects of this across our network have been felt by many of you when travelling with us.

So what have we been doing to support bus operators with this challenge?

Over the past 4 months, we’ve been actively advertising on social media (Facebook and Instagram), to find people who show an interest in driving buses in Auckland. We’ve then passed on these leads to our operators, who in turn use them to help them find drivers for interviews and training. This is in addition to any advertising the operators have done themselves.

We’re on track to get back to normal reliability in bus services by the end of September. Across all operators, there are over 200 new drivers in training now, with more recruited and waiting to start training.

You can expect significant increases in the number of services operated, and reductions in the number of cancellations as these drivers join the workforce each month.

You might spot new drivers riding on buses to learn the routes. They’ll be in uniform and hi-vis vests, watching from the front of the bus.

Good news for animal lovers!

If you hadn’t heard the pawsitive news yet – we’re in the middle of running an 8 week trial which means you can bring your larger furry friends with you on the bus!

Pets on buses

The trial runs from 21 May to 16 July 2023. Just a few house rules to remember!

  • Big dogs that do not fit in carriers must have a lead and approved muzzle to travel
  • You can travel with your pet on weekdays between the hours of 9am and 3pm, after 6:30pm, and all-day on weekends and public holidays.
  • Yes! Travel for your pet is free.
  • No pets on the upper deck of buses or sitting on bus seats.
  • You are responsible for your pet’s mess (Good boys only)

Hibiscus Coast bus station waka

Showcasing our Māori architecture across Tāmaki Makaurau

Waka decal

Last month we began showcasing some of our beautiful mahi toi (artwork) around Tāmaki Makaurau.

Up next is one of our many stops and bus stations which feature incredible Māori architecture; the Hibiscus Coast bus station.

Sitting at a natural crossroads, the Hibiscus Coast Bus Station connects the northern most parts of our network, from Whakapirau / Wellsford to Whangaparāoa, Te Raki Paewhenua / the North Shore and the Auckland city centre.

The waka at the entrance to the station conveys the history of movement in a landscape defined by relationships between tāngata (people), whenua (land), and moana (sea). Designs incorporated into the tauihu (bow) and taurapa (stern) of the waka recognise mana whenua as kaitiaki (guardians) of te taiao (the environment).

Next time you're passing through Hibiscus Coast bus station, make sure you check out this beautiful waka.
