Want to encourage your staff to ride e-bikes?

Free breakfast event on Tuesday 22 October

The NZ Transport Agency, in partnership with the Sustainable Business Network (SBN), launched a new e-bike purchase support guide last month, which aims to help employers make it easier for their staff to buy e-bikes through discounted bulk purchases and reducing upfront costs for individuals. SBN and AT are hosting a breakfast event about the guide and we would love you to join us from 8am to 9am at the AT Office, 20 Viaduct Harbour Avenue.

Free Child Weekend Fares

Register your child’s AT HOP card today

Free Child Weekend Fares are here! Children under 5 already travel free of charge, but from 7 September, children aged between 5 and 15 travelling with a registered AT HOP Card have been able to travel free on trains, buses and ferries* on weekends and on public holidays.

Register your child’s AT HOP card, and the Child Concession will be automatically loaded when you enter their date of birth. Your child still needs to tag on and off for every journey, but there is no charge on the weekend.

*Skybus and some ferry services excluded.

Did you take up the Challenge to be car free?

Car Free Day is celebrated internationally every year on 22 September. This year it fell on a Sunday and cities around New Zealand and the world used the opportunity to encourage residents to plan a family outing on public transport, or get the bikes, trikes and scooters together for an active day out.

London closed 20 km of roads in the city and transformed them into ‘play streets’ to help tackle the cities air pollution problems. Dunedin ran family events in the Octagon including the opportunity to try out e-scooters and bikes, supported by free buses running all day.  Nelson and Tasman also had free buses all weekend to encourage car-less exploration of the area and Tauranga, New Zealand’s most car dependent city, encouraged new travel choices with free bus travel across the city and by transforming one of its main streets into an urban public space with popular activities, including a pop up ice skating rink.

Auckland Bike Challenge fundraiser for Variety

Feel good moment with the Bike Challenge

80 children from 17 schools were presented with new bikes and helmets in August from funds raised by Auckland Bike Challenge participants as part of Variety’s Bikes for Kids programme.

“Variety is elated with the partnership with Auckland Transport this year,” said Variety CEO Lorraine Taylor. “Thanks to our tireless and committed fundraisers and supporters, we can give more Kiwi kids the experience of independence and the joy that comes with having their own bike.”

Thanks to everyone who attracted sponsorship, sponsored a work mate, purchased raffle tickets, baked cakes, bought cakes or took part in the sprint challenge - helping to pay it forward to the future generation of bikers!

PARK(ing) Day

Parklets in car parks on 20 September

To highlight the dominance of parking on Auckland’s streets, Friday 20 September saw community groups and businesses take over carparks and recreate them as ‘parklets’ for the community to enjoy.

About 40 temporary parklets were set up across the Auckland City Centre, Devonport, Henderson, Panmure and Takapuna. Car parks across the city were transformed into kiwi campsites, architectural bike lounges, skate parks and more.

Beat the traffic getting to Newmarket

Public transport is an easy option

Visitors to Newmarket are expected to increase in the coming months with the opening of the new Westfield Newmarket shopping mall. The first lot of shops including Farmers have already opened and the construction will be finished by mid-December. When completed, the development at 309 and 277 Broadway will include over 230 new stores and eateries.

If you want to travel to Newmarket and beat the traffic, it's easier than ever to use public transport. Newmarket has train links with the three Auckland train routes and an excellent bus service connecting it to the Auckland City Centre and down Manukau and Remuera Roads.
