Tips and tricks for carpooling in your workplace

The average Aucklander spends $230 a week on transport costs. They also spend the same amount of time stuck in traffic as they do on annual leave.

We know that choosing public transport, cycling or walking for your daily commute is not possible for everyone. However, carpooling may be a great alternative if driving is your only option.

Supporting staff to carpool with colleagues once or twice a week provides many benefits, including:

  • Improved wellbeing and reduced stress by sharing the driving
  • Financial relief through shared fuel or parking costs
  • Faster journeys to work if using T2 or T3 lanes
  • Environmental sustainability through reduced carbon emissions, quieter roads and improved air quality

Not sure where to start? Check out our guide and get in touch if you want support setting up workplace carpooling.

Creating a network of community bike hubs

Waiheke and Mount Roskill launch in June!

More bike hubs will be opening this year to strengthen the existing network of six, and provide more community spaces to support Aucklanders in choosing cycling as a reliable way to get around.

The existing hubs have been extremely successful in encouraging and supporting individuals to continue on their cycling journey. These AT-supported community-run spaces offer many free services, including bike fixes, maintenance advice, workshops, activities, and events. Restored and safety-checked second-hand bikes are also for sale on-site.

We’ve now received the green light for our first three hubs - Waiheke, Mount Roskill and Pakuranga. Keep an eye out for a new bike hub popping up near you!

Whau the People – Avondale's first open street

On Saturday 15 April, Auckland Transport partnered with Avondale community group Whau the People to deliver Avondale Open Streets - an arts festival with a live stage of musical acts pumping out talent to a large audience.

An open street is a way of reimaging how we could be using our public spaces. Closing Great North Road to cars and opening it to people fostered a fun, safe event for local residents, community and businesses.

The Open Streets series is part of the $3 million Vibrant Streets programme, which aligns with the Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan to reduce transport emissions by making Auckland easier to walk and cycle around.

Check out the other events coming up in Avondale this year:

  • Matariki (July 2023): From traffic lights to starry nights
  • Woven Festival (September 2023): Weaving people and culture together
  • Christmas (November 2023): From cars to carols
