Kia Ora,

This month we have an awesome giveaway with Ground Effect, news on our Community Bike Fund, and two guided rides for you to check out.

Keep your hands snug while cycling

Winter riding competition

Head over to Facebook or Instagram to enter to win a pair of Ground Effect riding gloves. We’ve got three pairs to give away, and all you have to do is leave a comment telling us your best riding story.

These gloves have a waterproof liner plus water-repellent outer fabric, deflecting rain to keep your digits warmer, drier and happier. Cycle specific design provides a positive contact with your handlebar grip and minimal slippage between the glove liner and outer. Mmmmmm, cozy.

AT Community Bike Fund

Applications open until 14 August

Community bike fund applications now open

What is the AT Community bike fund?

This initiative supports community groups that encourage people to ride bikes in Auckland.

Groups can apply for between $300 and $5000.

Could your community group apply?

If you’re involved with a community group, you can apply for funding through the Community Bike Fund to include cycling in your activities.

Your group doesn’t have to have a cycling focus, but if you’d like cycling to become a part of your projects, activities or events – this could be for you.

Guided rides

Come explore two brand new paths with us!

In last month's newsletter we introduced you to two new paths that have opened in Auckland. Now you can join us for fun, free guided rides of Glen Innes to Tamaki and New Lynn to Avondale paths.

These guided rides are for people who are already confident on a bike. Bikes and helmets can be provided for free. Or, if you’ve got your own bike, you’re welcome to bring it along with you.

Our guides will take you on a tour of either path – which are both separate and entirely protected from traffic. They're a great way to get around Tāmaki Makaurau and we hope that they'll inspire you to think about riding to work, school, or play, so we can make Auckland a healthier, happier city.

Register now to join us on free guided rides of the two new paths.

Winter riding tips

Pedal on through winter with some handy tips

1.  Bike bright! Get your bike lights and reflectors sorted. Remember white lights at the front, and red lights at the rear for keeping you safe at night and in low light conditions.

2. Sing in the rain – just stay alert too! There’s something quite liberating about riding in the rain. But don’t let it fool you – ride to the conditions and keep an eye out for road markings, manhole covers and leaves.

3. Treat your bike to some well-deserved pampering. Check your tyres. Put winter lubricant on your chain. Check your brakes work well as they can wear down quicker in wet and dirty conditions.

4. Colour is the new black. Wear something bright and colourful. Reflective strips, rain jackets, mudguards and gloves can all help in cold and wet conditions.
